Beogradska 15

The one-story residential and business house was built in the middle of the 18th century on the regulation line of the former Main Street, today Beogradska Street. Back in 1765, the first pharmacy in Petrovaradin was opened in this house, and it served primarily for military purposes. The new tenant was first a trading company from Timişoara, but due to weak business, it passed into private hands. In 1802, it was taken over by pharmacist Franz Shams, a native of the Czech Republic, who also dealt with the past of Petrovaradin and Fruškogorje. After his departure, since 1817, the pharmacy changed owners several times. One of them was Theodore Deodato who collected old books, weapons and other art objects.

Tu su se u svoje vreme okupljale ličnosti od pera – pesnici i književnici. Apoteka se neko vreme zvala “Кod zlatnog orla”, a predmeti i deo mobilijara čuva se danas u Muzeju grada Novog Sada.

At the end of the 20th century, the building was renovated, insulated from moisture, the premises were adapted, and the facade was restored. The house has a rectangular base with an entrance-hallway and shops on both sides.

On the left side is a double staircase to the first floor. All rooms on the ground floor are vaulted with cross vaults. There is a spacious living space on the first floor. On the courtyard side, a balcony has been added on concrete structure pillars and a corrugated iron roof. On the right side, at the bottom of the courtyard, there is a one-story courtyard building, once residential, now neglected. The vaulted basement occupies the left part of the building. The roof is extremely high, covered with pepper tiles with three preserved massive chimneys.

The street facade has four opening axes; on the ground floor there are the entrance doors, portals of the shop and one window on the far right, and on the first floor there are four rectangular windows (one of them is a kibic-fenster).

The plaster decoration around the floor openings is in the form of a profiled plaster frame and a curvilinear pediment. The mezzanine and attic cornice are emphasized and multi-profiled. The wooden double-leaf entrance gate is made of diagonally placed slats with characteristic iron fittings.

In the lunette above the door, there is a symmetrically shaped stylized decoration made of wrought iron, which is also repeated above the courtyard door. All ground floor openings have iron protective shutters with wrought iron fittings.

The vaulted entrance with the original gate, the layout of the space and the preserved arched structures, the shape of the roof and the preserved wrought iron elements characteristic of Baroque architecture, make the building unique in the entire suburb of the Fortress.
