Vladika Nikolaja square 5 – Military hospital complex (VMC Novi Sad)

The Military Hospital complex includes the premises and facilities of the Lower Fortress within the northwestern bastion front, bordered by the bastions of St. Teresa and St. Jozef, Vladika Nikolaja Square and Prota Mihaldžić and Vladimir Nazor streets. It consists of several buildings built in different time periods, from the end of the 17th century to the mid-20s of the 20th century. The core of the complex is the baroque structure of the former Franciscan monastery, which was later joined by the monastery church of St. Franje, and then the Fortress Commander’s Building. In addition to these facilities, today’s Military Hospital complex includes the Great Barracks, the Isolated Pavilion, the Teresia powder room, a series of casemates between the New and the Fallout Gate, as well as the Old War Command building on Vladika Nikolaj Square. The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Pavla, a purpose-built chapel that was returned to the church in 1991.

The Old Core of Novi Sad was declared a cultural asset, by the decision on establishing it as a spatial cultural-historical unit – 05 no. 633-151/2008 of January 17, 2008, “Sl. gazette of the Republic of Serbia” no. 07/2008.
