JEVREJSKA 21 – KATASTAR

Corner of Jevrejska and Vase Pelagića Streets

At the corner of Jevrejska and Vase Pelagića streets stands a monumental two-story building, constructed in the late 19th century.

Its footprint already appears on the 1900 city plan.

Since its construction, the building has served a public function—initially as the Chamber House (customs office), and today known as the “Katastar”, as it houses the Republic Geodetic Authority.

The building features a shorter wing along Jevrejska Street and a longer one along Vase Pelagića. The main façade is marked by two corner risalits and seven window axes, while the Vase Pelagića façade features eleven axes and two risalits.

The corner entrance (now bricked up) is particularly prominent, designed as a portico with Tuscan columns supporting a shallow oriel.

Above it rises a dome with a lantern, flanked by massive Neo-Baroque dormers

.

The façade is dominated by semicircular windows and a coach gate, with two large three-winged windows on the corner risalits of the ground floor standing out for their size and position.

The base of the building is treated in rusticated masonry; the ground and first floors are separated by a string course cornice, and the upper floor surfaces are clad in brickwork of two tones. The upper-floor windows are adorned with decorative pediments, while those at the corners are further emphasized with arched crowns and angel sculptures.

The roof parapets are richly decorated with garlands, oculi, and vegetal motifs. Inside, parts of Prussian vaults have been preserved, while on the courtyard side there is a balcony corridor with an iron railing on a metal frame.

Chamber house, along with the two tall ground-floor buildings extending along Vase Pelagića Street, forms a significant architectural and stylistic ensemble, and is a notable example of representative eclecticism in Novi Sad.
